Appointment Announcement

Due to some delays, we were unable to get the following appointment announcement online on the conference website.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ty Blackwell to Forest Memorial United Methodist Church.

Ty was born and raised in Baltimore, MD and has been living in Prince George’s County for the past 19 years. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and a Master's degree in Education. In addition, Ty also received his Master of Divinity degree from Howard University.

Over the past 15 years, Ty has been working in the ordained ministry in several churches in the Washington DC metropolitan area. He looks forward to working with Forest Memorial UMC so that they can be a lighthouse to their community by offering the Word of God and resources to meet their spiritual, emotional and physical needs.

New Building Update
While we are moved into our new building, we are experiencing issues with the phones. In the interim, please try and email us instead of calling. I have been hearing that most callers cannot get through when they do call and if they do get through, they have a hard time hearing us.

Fridays with the Faculty
The new Ecumenical Institute of Theology program, “Fridays with the Faculty,” will begin September 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Laubacher Hall with a dramatic presentation (biblical storytelling) of the Gospel of Mark in its entirety, by Dr. Tracy Radosevic. http://www.stmarys.edu/ei/Tracy%20Radosevic-Fridays%20with%20the%20Faculty.pdf  The evening event is free and open to the public. Our intent is both to offer a meaningful program to the community and to bring more people to campus, especially prospective students! So, please invite your friends, family, co-workers, whoever! Consider it an opportunity to recruit for the E.I.!

In addition, Dr. Radosevic will offer an introductory workshop on biblical storytelling at 9 a.m. that morning, also in Laubacher Hall. Attached you will find a flier with all the details. Please read it and mark your calendar—and pass it along, post it on a bulletin board, or include it in a church bulletin or newsletter!

Do you need hanging file folders for your church office? If so, stop by the conference center in Columbia before Thursday and ask to see Pam Mullay. She currently has a large number of hanging file folders that she will not need in the new conference center space.

Early Response Team Training

Would you like to work with your hands?

Can you work independently with little outside support?

Would you like to be Christ’s presence to people following a disaster?

If this describes your passion then you need to consider becoming a Early Response Team Volunteer from the Baltimore-Washington Conference (BWC).

An Early Response Team (ERT) is a small self-sufficient group of volunteers who go into a disaster area after the First Responders have secured the area and help begin the process of helping survivors put their lives back together. ERTs typically travel on short notice to disaster area either in the BWC or in nearby Methodist Conferences at their invitation. All ERTs are trained through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and are ready to stabilize an area in preparation for Volunteer In Missions (VIM) teams. ERTs work hard removing debris and cleaning houses, but most importantly we represent Christ’s presence to those who have survived a disaster.

The BWC is in the process of recruiting and training ERT volunteers so we are ready to respond when a disaster strikes. An information session will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. at Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church, 10610 Old Fort Road, Fort Washington, Maryland.

At the information session you can learn more about ERTs, ask questions, and sign up for training so you can participate in this very important ministry of The United Methodist Church.

For more information, contact: Rev. Stephen Ricketts - Southern Region Disaster Coordinator, 301-292-2323.
